Jose's Story

Life It’s hard to imagine that it has been almost forty years since we graduated from high school. So much has happened to all of us. Like many of you, I went to college after graduation. Unlike many of you, I promptly flunked out my first year. This was a direct result of excessive partying and no studying. So I did the next best thing…..I joined the Navy. I was pretty lucky though, because for the next nine years of my military career, I was fortunate enough to be assigned to a few good duty stations like Florida, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Southern California. About this same time, I also got married and would eventually have three daughters. The marriage lasted for twelve years, but my daughters were forever. During my last tour of duty, I decided that it might be a good idea to get my college education, so I pursued a degree in Criminal Justice and eventually graduated with my B.S. from Southwest Texas State University. That was the beginning of my twenty-eight year career in law enforcement. I spent the last sixteen years of my police career as a detective, and I was also a hostage/crisis negotiator and police instructor for eighteen years. In 1987 I fell in love with and married a beautiful lady whose name is Patti. She and I have been happily married for just over twenty years now. Patti had a daughter from a previous marriage, so that brought me up to four daughters. About three years before I retired from the...Expand for more
Carrollton Police Department, I decided to go back to college and earn my master’s degree. I did earn my degree in Dispute Resolution from Southern Methodist University which led to me becoming an adjunct teacher at Dallas area colleges. I’m very competitive by nature and over the years, I’ve somehow or another been involved in sports. But no one could have ever convinced me that at this stage in my life, I would be boxing. I like working out in the gym, and about a year and a half ago, a workout buddy talked me into signing up for a major boxing tournament. It’s called the “Guns and Hoses” Boxing Tournament. It’s a fundraiser where police officers duke it out with firefighters. I trained real hard and I got hurt several times before my fight, but it paid off, because I won. But that’s it, “No mas!” I still train, but I don’t fight anymore. I was blessed to have six beautiful grandchildren (another one is on the way). One of my granddaughters is Alexandria. She was a fighter too, only her fight was much more serious. She developed leukemia when she was one and a half years old and she fought hard for another year and a half years before she went to heaven. Alexandria was my inspiration when I trained and fought in the ring. So many other good things have happened in my life and I feel blessed, and I am looking forward to our class reunion to see everyone once again to reminisce about old days and talk about the future.
